Lokonayak Omeo Kumar Das College was established in the year 1970. At that time, the department of Zoology was not introduced in the college. Following persistent public demands, the department of Zoology was introduced in the year 1992 at the Higher Secondary Level. Then Principal Mr. R.N Bhuyan has to take a lot of pain in establishing the department and to make it materially and academically sound. Lecturer Manju Lata Adhikari had been the sole faculty till 1996. However, at present there are three faculties serving the Department.

In the academic Session 1994-1995, the first batch of students of degree level was admitted and thus the rteal University classes (Pass Course) were started. In the University examination, the students showed good results which attracted the attention of the college authority and accordingly in the session of 2005-06, Major Course was included in the department. The first batch of the major students appeared in the Part-I examination and passed successfully with flying colours.

Apart from encouraging the students with regular classes as per allotted routine, the department has initiated a number of other programmes. There is provision of group discussion, departmental seminar, comprehensive evaluation, educational tours, allotment of project works and interaction sessions with neighbouring institutions.
